Hōkūle‘a, Star of Gladness

The Polynesian Voyaging Societyʻs Double-hulled twin masted Hawaiian voyaging canoe arrives to a celebration on the beach at Kailua, Hawaii on 16 October 2013.
They are establishing Mālama Honua (Taking care of the Island Easth) at home and connecting with communities before leaving for the South Pacific in May 2014. This is one of many port stops before leaving in the Spring.
Hokulea is the Polynesian name for brightest star in the constellation Boötes. Hōkūle‘a uses traditional Polynesian navigation methods, which include sailing by the stars.
